decisions, decisions.
The two most important decisions you’ll ever make are:
1) Who you’ll marry
2) Your profession
The latter of the two is not so fun…at least I don’t think so. Truth is, you spend your entire life chasing your future occupation. Middle school will prepare you for high school, which will prepare you for college, which will prepare you to either enter the workforce directly, or go through more schooling. And once you’ve landed that first job, you will need to work your ass off to prove yourself, to get promoted and so on, and so on. That’s why they advise you to choose a career you’d love.
But, what if you don’t know what you want to do? What if you’re unsure of the profession you’ve chosen? What if what you “love” doesn’t make any money?

Ever since I could remember, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I didn’t just admire clothes, I wanted to construct them— I get that from my dad. (No, he does not make clothes, but he builds things—everything. He has built chairs, tables, houses—you name it, he’s built it.) To this day, I still love fashion and sewing, and all the arts and crafts you could possibly think of— but becoming a fashion designer isn’t exactly easy or stable.
So, I chose optometry. After all, the eyes are the tools that allow us to admire fashion and art, right? I won’t feed you the bull that I tell to admissions, but I’ll tell you that the eyes are the coolest part of your body. It’s not the biology or the physics that make them cool— its what the eyes give us that’s worth preserving. Like, the first time you see your new baby sister, or the first time you realized your favorite color was yellow, or being able to see the looks on everyone’s faces when they open their Christmas presents.
While I have a passion for optometry, I also have my reservations. Recently, I was presented with an opportunity to enter the workforce directly, working in a Fortune 500 company in a communication/engineering role. It was never in my plans, and I’ve been tossing and turning to decide what to do. Ultimately, the decision was made for me, as the company is now on a hiring freeze. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I can’t wait for what God has planned for me :)
